Nunes was born to Ivete Nunes and Sindoval Nunes. She shares the same parents with her two older sisters, Valdirene and Vanessa.

On November 6, 2013, Nunes competed in her second UFC match against Germaine de Randamie at UFC Fight Night 31. In the first round, she obtained a TKO victory.

At UFC 178 on September 27, 2014, Nunes squared off against Cat Zingano. In the first round, Zingano was almost knocked out with punches, but she lost that round before being defeated by TKO.

Following a three-fight winning streak, Nunes was given her first title opportunity in the UFC. On July 9, 2016, at UFC 200, she competed against Miesha Tate for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship.

Tate was initially taken aback by Nunes’ knees and punches, and in the first round, the fight was won by rear-naked choke submission. She became the first openly homosexual UFC champion thanks to her triumph.

In the main event of UFC 207 on December 30, 2016, Nunes successfully defended her championship against Ronda Rousey, who had recently returned to the sport. 48 seconds into the first round, punches from Nunes resulted in a TKO victory.
